Environmental and health and safety lawyers

Environmental and safety issues can quickly escalate into legal and regulatory challenges. Whether planning or responding to emergencies, our specialists provide clear and practical advice at short notice to protect your business and reputation.

We have an experienced environmental and health and safety (EHS) team, who provide in-depth and practical advice on transactions, regulatory advice and litigation. We deliver commercially focussed and sector-specific advice, to help our clients navigate and manage EHS risks whilst adapting to an increasingly complex regulatory framework.

How we can help

Our team advises on the full spectrum of EHS issues. Key areas include the following and we've separately summarised our EHS litigation-related advice here:

  • Contaminated Land risk management, for developers, owners, occupiers, and investors of sites. We assist with due diligence on transactions, contractual drafting and negotiation, appointment of consultants and use of tailored risk management mechanisms. This often includes discussion of water-borne contamination, asbestos, other land contamination and Japanese Knotweed

  • Environmental Impact Assessments, habitats risk assessments, protected species and the environmental aspects of other planning documentation for developments, particularly in areas where there are constraints due to the proximity of protected species or sites. We draft and review relevant documents and regularly work with regulators, statutory bodies and teams of specialist consultants to achieve our clients' objectives as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible

  • Advising operators of waste facilities and waste carriers on a huge range of waste management and other regulatory issues. Examples include advising on interpretation and drafting of supply agreements, permitting compliance and detailed advice on the definition of waste, regulatory investigations and enforcement notices and due diligence, contract drafting and negotiation on transactions involving acquisition and sale of waste facilities

  • Environmental permits and conditions, including compliance with permits, correspondence with regulators and assistance with obtaining, transfer and surrender of permits.

  • Carbon trading and carbon regulatory (including energy efficiency) advice relating to the buildings and operations of our clients, as well as sustainability reporting, where we've advised listed and smaller client organisations on their regulated and voluntary disclosures of ESG information
