Malaysia

Trowers & Hamlins has been part of the Malaysian legal landscape since 2012 and the first to receive a Qualified Foreign Law Firm (QFLF) licence in 2015.  From our Malaysia office, we provide clients with international legal expertise, serving as trusted advisors to government entities, corporates, and financial institutions across the country and the wider region, making the office a central pillar of the firm’s ASEAN offer.

Our team advises clients throughout Southeast Asia on cross-border investments, M&A, private equity, and financing (both conventional and Shari’ah-compliant), across key sectors including real estate, infrastructure, energy, construction and hospitality.

We bridge international capability with local insight and grounded regional knowledge, delivering commercially driven advice across jurisdictions.  In 2025, we were named Foreign Law Firm of the Year – Malaysia Practice by Asian Legal Business, a recognition of the trust placed in us by clients and our long-term commitment to the region.

Our expertise

Corporate and Commercial

Our corporate practice plays a central role in driving the firm’s ASEAN strategy, offering clients deep insight paired with international experience and reach.  We provide commercially focused advice across M&A, joint ventures, foreign direct investments, corporate structuring, ESG governance, and board-level strategy.  Our track record includes acting on high-profile transactions involving PNB, Tabung Haji, Gamuda Land, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad and Voltas Limited. The team is ranked Tier 1 for Malaysia: Foreign Firms in The Legal 500 Asia Pacific 2025 and has been consistently recognised in Chambers Global since 2022.

Banking and Finance

Recognised for our ‘strong capability in project management, problem solving in a practical sense, and risk mitigation’, the team supports clients across the ASEAN and Middle East regions on complex debt structures, Shari’ah-compliant financing, real estate finance and restructuring.  Our clients include leading regional and international institutions such as Maybank, RHB, First Abu Dhabi Bank, ICICI Bank, IndusInd and Axis Bank.

Projects, Energy and Infrastructure

Drawing on deep regional experience, the team advises on the structuring, procurement, and financing of key infrastructure assets across Southeast Asia and the Gulf, from transport and power to water and petrochemicals.  We support sponsors, lenders, and public sector bodies from bid stage to financial close, with a strong track record in both conventional and renewable energy as well as public-private partnerships.  With integrated project and finance capability and fluency in Islamic and conventional structures, recent mandates include work for Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Hanwha E&C, and KEXIM.

Construction

We have a dedicated construction team covering the full development life cycle of construction projects.  Our offering spans both contentious and non-contentious construction, with expertise in bespoke agreements to best suit our clients' needs as well as all major industry standard forms, including JCT, NEC, FIDIC, CIC, RIBA and ACA Alliancing Contracts.  Clients instruct us for our longstanding presence in Asia and the Gulf, deep sector knowledge, and trusted relationships across the supply chain. Our appointment on high-profile and complex projects, including arbitration and ADR mandates for clients such as ADNOC, be’ah (Oman Environmental Services Company), and Arabian Construction Company, reflects the scale and calibre of our work on complex construction matters across the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Our team and head of office

Our Malaysia team is led by Nick Edmondes, Resident Managing Partner, who has over 40 years of international experience. Nick was recently recognised as a Leading Partner by Legal 500 Asia Pacific 2025, and by Chambers & Partners as a Notable Practitioner.

Trowers' in-country team also includes Geoff Allen, Partner and Head of the Corporate and Commercial team, who brings over 20 years of cross-border M&A and ESG-driven mandates. Leading the banking and finance team is Nicol Ong, who is our first homegrown Malaysian partner and was previously named in ALB’s Asia 40 Under 40.

The teams work in close cooperation with our International practice leads, ensuring clients benefit from experience drawn from the right lawyers from across our international practice whilst benefitting from local support in the same country and time zone.

“Our presence in Malaysia reflects our commitment to delivering first-rate legal services, drawing on deep international expertise tailored to the commercial expectations and legal appetites of Malaysian and ASEAN clients. With a growing team in Kuala Lumpur, we continue to enhance and deepen our capacity to deliver a full range of international legal services, tailored to the demands of the region and as part of the firm’s wider international offering.” - Nick Edmondes

Community engagement

Local partnerships

Our Malaysia office is actively engaged in supporting the legal and educational community.  We collaborate with Taylor’s University and the Malaysian Law Students’ Union in the UK and Eire (KPUM) to offer internship opportunities, giving law students hands-on exposure to legal practice in an international firm.  Each year, we also support Taylor’s University by sponsoring a token of recognition for their annual awards and accolades ceremony as part of our continued commitment to nurturing future legal talent and contributing meaningfully to the legal education landscape in Malaysia.

Corporate social responsibility (CSR)

The Kuala Lumpur (KL) office takes on activities on the initiative of our entire team, including  collaboration with the non-profit organisation Kechara Soup Kitchen Society in order to rescue surplus fresh produce from partner hypermarkets and redistribute it to registered families or charity homes.
