With the end of the pandemic in sight, business and investor confidence has boosted dealmaking and valuations have reached new highs with pent-up demand and cash reserves.

The mid-market has seen no shortage of transactional activity, though certain sectors are clearly more buoyant than others. ONS data presented a strong overall uptick in monthly M&A activity in late 2020 and throughout 2021 and as shown by the research we present in this report, strong appetite from private equity has driven much of this activity.

In this annual survey of mid-market M&A activity we also seek to answer the following questions and themes:

  • what does the future look like for UK mid-market M&A activity?
  • what are the motivating factors in getting deals done?
  • the impact of technology
  • and where does dealmaking stands in relation to environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues?

Each of these issues warrant detailed exploration and we have consulted with expert voices from the corporate, private equity and corporate finance worlds to gather a range of views on how these trends have played out and, crucially, where we are headed next.
