From January 2018, applicants for basic criminal records checks in England and Wales will have to apply directly to the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) for a basic certificate.

Previously all applications for basic disclosure from applicants in England, Wales and Scotland had to be submitted to Disclosure Scotland. Since 17 January Disclosure Scotland has not been dealing with basic disclosure application requests.

The DBS will be making a new online application form available for a basic disclosure certificate. A basic disclosure certificate contains details of convictions and conditional cautions that are considered to be unspent under the terms of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.
