Iain Benson


Iain is a Legal Director in the Projects and Construction team. He is based in our London office.

Iain's has extensive non-contentious experience advising employers, developers, funders and the contractor supply chain in relation to UK construction projects. His experience includes advising on all non-contentious aspects of a construction project including:

  • procurement strategies
  • drafting and negotiation of construction agreements (including framework agreements, building contracts, consultant appointments, bonds, guarantees and sub-contract amendments
  • practical project delivery issues (including supply chain insolvency and risk mitigation)
  • contractual mechanisms for project risk allocation and management. 

Having worked in both private legal practice in central London for many years, as well as spending a 5 year period working in-house as a senor solicitor for a leading UK FTSE 250 contractor, Iain has significant in depth experience advising on infrastructure as well as commercial building projects. He is familiar with and experienced in negotiating a full range of construction contract forms including JCT, NEC, MFI, iChemE and FIDIC. 

Iain is know for adopting a pragmatic, commercially focused, approach to achieve client goals and has an invaluable appreciation of what project risks can realistically be allocated between contracting parties, due to his in house experience.

Iain's primary sector knowledge includes acting on central London building and regeneration projects, the build to rent sector, landed estate developments (including public realm regen), transport, on-shore wind, education and defence.

Iain has a master's degree in Construction Law and Dispute Resolution from King's College London.
