How can we help you?

Trowers & Hamlins LLP is committed to fostering innovation in the ways we service our clients’ needs and support our people. Like our clients, the rapid rise of generative AI (GenAI) has required us to consider our approach to how to expand our use of AI technologies across our business operations. We are pleased to share more information on how we are exploring GenAI and staying at the forefront of legal service innovation.

Our AI technologies

The firm regularly uses AI-powered technologies to support aspects of our client work, including for drafting, document review and due diligence, and other automation.

As of 2025, the firm will be adopting GenAI solutions to support our delivery of client work. This will involve subscribing to GenAI-powered features within some of the existing technologies that we use for client work (such as legal research and document review platforms). Additionally, we will start to use new platforms primarily offering GenAI-powered capabilities, including general productivity applications and legal-specific solutions.

Our commitment to clients

We are committed to remaining transparent with our clients about how we use legal technologies and GenAI.

Our use of GenAI in the delivery of client work does not change our responsibility for the quality, accuracy or completeness of our advice and services, nor diminish our duties and professional obligations to our clients. Our approach to adopting GenAI has been considered by key stakeholders across our firm and includes ensuring we remain in compliance with our regulatory obligations and all data security and controls requirements.

FAQs

1. How do we use GenAI at Trowers & Hamlins and for what purpose?

We use Gen AI for a variety of tasks including legal research, document review, automation, drafting and general productivity. To ensure responsible, secure and compliant use of AI/GenAI the firm has put in place an AI governance framework, which is overseen by our AI Governance Group.

2. Does Trowers & Hamlins use public GenAI applications like ChatGPT?

No. The use of publicly available GenAI applications, such as ChatGPT, are not currently permitted for any business use at Trowers & Hamlins.

3. Will my data be used to train GenAI applications or large language models (LLMs)?

No. As a matter of firm policy, we do not approve the use of any applications where our or our clients' data is used to train underlying shared models.

4. Will Trowers be changing its pricing?

Whilst we strive for efficiencies in the way we work, there is no direct link between our evolving use of technology and our pricing structures. As always, we will work with you to ensure that the service we deliver offers good value and achieves your aims.

5. What measures are employed to secure my data when used in a GenAI tool?

As part of our vendor due diligence process, we ensure that all applications enable data storage in data centres located in the UK or jurisdictions with equivalency measures in place and which are segregated for Trowers-only data, that vendors and other third parties do not have access to such data except with our express consent, and that all data is encrypted in transit and at rest in accordance with industry standards.

6. How will the use of GenAI applications affect the privileged status of the advice I receive from Trowers & Hamlins?

Privilege is not lost solely because privileged information is made available to a GenAI tool. We ensure that vendors do not have access to any information made available to the applications without our consent, do not share or disclose such information to third parties without our consent, act as a processor of personal data in accordance with our instructions, and do not use such information to train underlying shared models. However, any use of GenAI applications needs to take into account the need to maintain privilege, where relevant, and this forms part of the internal training we provide to staff.

7. How will I know if GenAI is used on my matter?

We will comply with relevant contractual client notification and approval requirements regarding the use of any new GenAI tool prior to the use with those clients. We will also comply with relevant legal or regulatory obligations to disclose the use of GenAI in the preparation of particular deliverables (for example, court filings). Otherwise, GenAI is simply one of many technologies that the firm may use as a matter of course to support the delivery of our client work. If you have questions about the use of GenAI on a particular matter, please speak to your matter team.
