Trowers advises RCSI Bahrain on revolutionary campus solar farm project

International law firm Trowers & Hamlins advised The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland – Medical University of Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain) on the development of a ground-breaking campus solar farm project.

RCSI Bahrain is a constituent university of RCSI, which was established in Dublin, Ireland in 1784 and first opened in Bahrain in 2004. The independent private university is a not-for-profit health sciences institution and is perhaps the most prominent and highly regarded of medical universities in Bahrain. Delivering a sustainable business is central to RCSI Bahrain's ethos.

Trowers advised RCSI Bahrain on the development of the right contractual structure for the proposed rooftop solar panel project, taking into account how to ensure the project fit within the Government of Bahrain's evolving regulations on solar energy. Alongside RCSI Bahrain's technical consultants, Trowers then advised on the tender process and helped to negotiate and finalise contracts with the preferred bidder, Almoayyed International Group.

The solar farm will cover 12,000 sqm and is expected to be completed in January 2023.

Partner Abdulhaq Mohammed, RCSI's client relationship partner, said:

"It is always a pleasure working with RCSI, one of our most longstanding clients. This sustainability project aligns both with our firm's responsible business goals, as part of which we are seeking to deliver real and lasting change for the benefit of our clients, and RCSI's drive towards sustainability. This campus-based solar project is truly exciting and demonstrates how RCSI Bahrain is leading the way for a sustainable approach to education in the Middle East."

Stephen Harrison-Mirfield, Chief Operating Officer at RCSI Bahrain said:

"This vast project for RCSI underpins our commitment to sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development goals. The solar farm will generate around 65% of our annual electricity requirements and represents a significant investment and long-term commitment to working with our partners. Trowers and Hamlins have been pivotal partners in this achievement and, as they have done for many years, have ensured we have developed an excellent contractual framework that facilitates this project's successful completion and operation."
