Ian has over 25 years' experience in advising charities, housing associations and local authorities and has established himself as a trusted adviser on charity law, governance, corporate and regulatory issues. 

Specialising in charity and not for profit law and regulation Ian is often called upon to advise on the corporate aspects of their operations including the establishment of new organisations, mergers and restructures of organisations and groups including business reviews to ensure that they are fit for purpose.  Ian also advises on governance and assurance arrangements, the implications of charitable status and regulatory requirements including the requirements of registration with and regulation by the Charity Commission and the Regulator of Social Housing.   Ian frequently advises charities on their involvement in complex structures and real estate transactions alongside Trowers' real estate and taxation specialists.

Ian is also a trusted adviser to the Regulator of Social Housing having advised on the rescue of Ujima and Cosmopolitan and upon aspects of the establishment of the housing administration regime.

Ian leads the corporate and governance team and the charities group for Trowers and is himself ranked as a notable practitioner within social housing and charities [add in quotes etc.

Ian is co-author of the Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Handbook.Ian is a partner in Trowers & Hamlins' Housing and Regeneration department. Ian is also the head of the firm's Charities and Governance team. Ian specialises in advising charities, housing organisations and other voluntary sector bodies as well as local authority commissioners and regulatory bodies. He has particular expertise of establishing charities, voluntary sector organisations and local authority companies, advising on business transformations, vires, governance issues, group structures and the relationships between organisations.

Ian is acknowledged as a leader in the field of both Social Housing and Charities in the Chambers and Partners' Guide to the Legal Profession 2016, where he is recognised in particular for his "expertise advising local authority companies and charities on a range of corporate and commercial issues". "Clients hold head of department Ian Davis in high esteem, citing his "good corporate governance knowledge" as one of his key strengths." One source is quoted saying: "On big mergers, he is our go-to lawyer". Other sources have praised him for his "unique set of knowledge in both charity and housing law".

Ian has a particular expertise in relation to exempt charities and is one the co-authors of the Handbook of Co-operative and Community Benefit Society Law.
