Trowers & Hamlins advises CancerPartners UK

First time third-party healthcare specialist teams up with private hospital group to deliver dedicated on-site cancer treatment centres in the UK

City law firm Trowers & Hamlins has advised CancerPartners UK, established by leading cancer experts to provide high quality care to cancer patients, on a partnership with Spire Healthcare to build and provide treatment at expanded, dedicated cancer centres on-site at three of its hospitals. Spire is one of the UK’s largest private hospital groups, treating 930,000 patients a year.

Trowers & Hamlins says that this is the first time a third-party healthcare provider has teamed up with a private hospital group to deliver dedicated cancer treatment centres on-site in the UK. The treatment centres will be built on Spire hospital sites in Birmingham, Leeds and Portsmouth and will offer the first private radiotherapy services outside of London.

Diagnostics, surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy will all be provided at the centres, which will be able to deliver treatment just seven days after referral. The very latest radiation therapies, already proven to be highly effective in the treatment of some of the UK’s most common cancers, will be available and the first patient is expected to be treated by July 2009.

The Trowers & Hamlins team, drawn from the firm’s Corporate, Projects & Construction and Commercial Property departments, advised CancerPartners UK on all aspects of the commercial agreements with Spire, the lease and the development of the specialist centres.

Tim Jenkins, Partner at Trowers & Hamlins, comments: “This is the first partnership of its kind in the UK and the combined expertise and resources of CancerPartners UK and Spire will improve access to the latest state-of-the-art treatments and the most comprehensive cancer care.”

“We were delighted to advise CancerPartners UK on a deal which underlines Trowers & Hamlins’ strength and experience in advising the healthcare sector.”
