Southwark is taking forward its BSF project as part of Wave 5 of the Government’s £45 billion programme, which will see the modernisation of the entire secondary schools estate in England by 2015.
Environmental sustainability is at the heart of design, with the new buildings’ mechanical and electrical systems specified to meet the latest environmental targets.
Assad Maqbool, lead solicitor from Trowers & Hamlins, comments: “We are delighted to have been involved in a project that will benefit the children of Walworth. The Walworth Academy building will be future-proofed to high technical standards, and will provide an excellent environment for learning.”
Demolition of the old building is due to commence next week and it is hoped that pupils of Walworth Academy will be using the new facilities from the beginning of 2010. The work will start in the play ground area to minimise disruption.
Helen Randall, head of Public Sector Commercial at Trowers & Hamlins, who has headed a number of similar projects under the BSF programme across the country: “This completion underlines our experience in completing innovative and sustainable education projects following our recent closure of the Barnet Primary Schools Capital Scheme with a dedicated team of education specialists in our offices in Manchester, London and Exeter.”
Trowers & Hamlins is accredited by the Partnerships for Schools legal services panel and is advising clients on a number of Academies projects and Essex, Kent, Blackpool, Hammersmith & Fulham, Tower Hamlets, Harrow, Wolverhampton and North Tyneside on their Building Schools for the Future and Academies projects. The firm is also advising school Governing Bodies, private sector contractors and clients from the not for profit sector on their interests in ongoing BSF Primary Capital and Academy projects.
